Welcome back to week 3 of the One Room Challenge! This week is all about the exciting part of this kitchen nook makeover and definitely the most transformative. We are installing kitchen backsplash panels! In this post, I will walk you though the process - from the preparation work to steps of the installation - and share some behind the scenes photos along the way.

preparation work before backsplash installation

Before we jump to the backsplash installation process, a bit of preparation work is essential. Not only to create a clean surface for the panels to stick to, but also have a smooth and stress free install. I started by carefully reading the instructions to make sure I did not miss any important steps. Definitely worth the few extra minutes! After that, I verified the amount of panels and double checked for any defects or issues before getting started. Since I had a power socket on the wall, I made sure to switch off the power at the fuse box and then uninstalled the socket cover to prep the area safely. Lastly, I gathered all the essential tools and cleaning supplies.

What you will need:

  • Ruler - for clean lines;
  • Measuring tape - for accurate dimensions;
  • Pencil - for marking placements on the panels;
  • Craft knife - for precise cuts;
  • Microfiber cloth - useful for both cleaning the surface and smoothing panels during installation;
  • Soft sponge and gentle cleaner to wipe down the area.

To prep the wall, I wiped down the surface thoroughly, removing any dust, grease, or residue that could affect the adhesive. I used a cleaner that’s free of alcohol or acids to protect the wall and ensure the panels would stick securely. A clean, smooth surface is key to a flawless finish!

With everything prepped and tools in hand, it was time to get started with the installation process. I rolled out the panels and laid them out on a flat surface with the design facing upwards to allow them to stretch. I ordered 2 backsplash panels in the same size - 25"H x 57"W, and luckily, the fit worked out perfectly for the space.
  1. I started by measuring the wall's height and width. Keep in mind: if your backsplash extends across multiple surfaces, it's best to measure each section one by one.
  2. Then I marked my dimensions directly onto the panels using a pencil.
  3. Using a sharp craft knife and ruler on a cutting mat, I made clean, precise cuts.
  4. Once the cuts were ready, I peeled back about 5-8 inches of backing paper for an easier start.
  5. I carefully positioned each panel, smoothing them onto the wall with a microfiber cloth to avoid bubbled and creases. The adhesive was strong but forgiving enough to adjust if needed.
  6. For areas around the socket, I used a craft knife for precise trimming.
  7. Lastly, I installed the socket back on.

And voilà - the backsplash installation is finished! The whole process was much easier than expected and seeing how it all came together - a true DIY win! The clear instructions and super helpful customer support team made everything feel manageable from start to finish. Stay tuned for the last One Room Challenge post where I’ll share the final reveal and all the styling touches that will bring this kitchen nook makeover to life!
