Wallpaper vs. Paint: What Do Installers Recommend?

Wallpaper vs Paint, proffesion opinion

Ask the people who hang wallpaper for a living, and the answer tends to lean one way: when you want a room to feel finished, full of character, and made to last, wallpaper has the edge. Of course, paint has its place. It’s affordable, quick, and sometimes simply the better choice. But when we asked professional installers why use wallpaper instead of paint?, their answers made one thing clear: there’s something about wallpaper that paint just can’t quite replicate.

We’ve been making wallpaper since 2014, so we’re not exactly neutral. That’s why we went straight to the pros, installers with 6 to 18+ years of experience, and let their insights lead the way.

Wallpaper vs. paint at a glance

Here's the short version before you scroll into the details.

What matters Wallpaper Paint
Lifespan About 10 to 15 years, often longer About 5 to 10 years before a refresh
Look and depth Pattern, texture, a custom, high-end finish Flat color; solid but plainer
Upfront cost Higher (material plus install) Lower, especially DIY
Best rooms Bedrooms, dining rooms, powder rooms, feature ceilings High-moisture and high-scuff spaces
Changing it later More work to remove Paint straight over it
The "wow" A statement, a focal point Clean backdrop

Short version: paint is the budget-friendly, low-commitment choice. Wallpaper is the one installers call a statement, and it tends to outlast a coat of paint by years. If you want to browse as you read, our full range of wallpaper designs is a good place to start.

Why installers recommend wallpaper over paint

We asked installers the question directly. The word that came up again and again was statement.

Angelo Angelini, who's been installing for a decade, didn't hedge:

Pro installer insight

Why use wallpaper instead of paint?

"Everything about wallpaper is better than paint. If you have nice trim in your home, wallpaper makes it pop. It's a statement, art that describes you, and it lasts longer than paint."

For Meg Tankovic, the appeal is speed and depth, a big change without a big renovation:

Pro installer insight

Why use wallpaper instead of paint?

"It's one of the fastest ways to completely change the vibe without a full renovation. Wallpaper adds a depth that paint just can't pull off, and it makes a statement, which I love."

And the team at Empire Restoration put their finger on what paint can't do, texture and a genuinely custom feel, especially in smaller rooms:

Why use wallpaper instead of paint?

"Wallpaper adds character, texture, and a high-end finish that paint alone can't achieve. It transforms a room, creates a focal point, and makes small spaces feel custom and luxurious."

Three installers, three angles, one theme: paint colors a wall, wallpaper changes it. If your trim and millwork are worth showing off, wallpaper is what makes them read as intentional.

Where the numbers back them up

Installer instinct lines up with the data on the two things buyers ask about most: how long it lasts, and what it costs.

Lifespan. High quality wallpaper generally lasts around 10 to 15 years, and often longer, while interior paint usually needs refreshing every 5 to 10 years, sooner in dark colors or busy rooms where scuffs show.

Cost. This is paint's home turf. Paint materials run roughly 12 cents a square foot; wallpaper materials sit closer to $1 to $5, and professional hanging adds labor on top. So paint wins the upfront-cost battle clearly. Wallpaper's case is the long game: fewer redos over the years, and a finish that reads as more expensive than it costs.

The honest opinion: if the budget is tight and you may want a different color next year, paint is the sensible pick. If you're dressing a room you want to love for a decade, wallpaper earns its price.

When paint is the smarter call (or the perfect partner)

Good pros don't oversell. The same installers who love wallpaper are quick to name where it needs care, and where paint does the job better or works alongside it.

Constant moisture. Wallpaper is welcome in most bathrooms and powder rooms, but with conditions. As Meg put it, it's situational: great behind a vanity in a room with no shower, riskier where a hot shower pumps out humidity, and best done in a vinyl or moisture-resistant material with good ventilation. In a wet, unventilated shower surround, paint or tile is still the safer call.

Sometimes paint is the prep. Here's the detail that surprises people: paint and wallpaper aren't always rivals. Installer Katie's advice for first-timers is to paint the wall white before hanging a light background wallpaper, so nothing shadows through the seams. Paint often does its best work underneath the paper.

So, which should you choose?

A quick way to decide, the way an installer would frame it:

  • Choose paint if you're on a tight budget, expect to change the color soon, or you're covering a high moisture shower wall.
  • Choose wallpaper if you want depth, texture, and a finish that lasts, for a bedroom, dining room, entry, powder room, or a show stopping ceiling.
  • Do both when it makes sense: paint the trim and prime the wall, then let the paper be the star.

If you're leaning toward wallpaper but not sure about the commitment, our peel and stick wallpaper materials come off cleanly, which makes them a favorite for renters!

Frequently asked questions

Do professional installers recommend wallpaper or paint?

For a lasting, high impact finish, most installers we spoke to recommend wallpaper. They describe it as a "statement" with texture and depth that paint can't match, and it typically lasts longer. They still recommend paint for tight budgets, frequent color changes, and high moisture shower walls.

Does wallpaper last longer than paint?

Usually, yes. Quality wallpaper commonly lasts about 10 to 15 years (often longer) with minimal upkeep, while interior paint tends to need a refresh every 5 to 10 years. Dark paint colors and high-traffic rooms wear faster.

Can I put wallpaper in a bathroom or powder room?

Often, yes, but bathrooms still require some extra caution. Installers recommend choosing a moisture-resistant wallpaper, such as our Commercial Vinyl Type II, and making sure the edges are properly sealed and the room has good ventilation. For areas with constant moisture or direct water exposure, such as inside a shower, paint or tile may still be the safer choice.

Can you put wallpaper over painted walls?

Yes, on a clean, smooth, primed, and fully dry surface. If the wall has been freshly painted, it’s important to let the paint dry completely before installing wallpaper. Installers may also recommend painting the wall first, such as using a white base coat under a light-background wallpaper to help prevent seams from showing through. As always, good prep is everything.

Is peel and stick wallpaper as good as traditional?

For temporary projects, rentals, accent walls, and kids' rooms, peel and stick is excellent and renter friendly. For a permanent, professional finish in a forever home, traditional wallpaper is usually the more durable choice.

Ready to make a statement?

The installers said it best: wallpaper is the fast way to give a room character that lasts. Browse all our wallpaper designs and when you've got a favorite or two, order samples and live with them in your own light for a few days. Not quite the right shade? We'll match a custom color for you. Pick your design, choose your material, and make it yours.
